Curriculum Synopsis

Born Gisela Marturet, September 18, 1948 in Caracas, Venezuela. .

Studies drawing and painting with Francisco Narváez.

Since 1974 she has been working in ceramics.

Studies and works for more than five years, since 1974 with María Luisa Tovar, a pioneer of ceramics in Venezuela.

In 1975 sets up her own ceramic’s studio in Caracas, where she currently works.

Participates in workshops given at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Deer Isle, Maine (1984,1985,1986), Escuela de Artes Visuales Cristobal Rojas Caracas (1981,1983), and AVAF (Asociación Venezolana de las Artes del Fuego) by international master potters including David Leach (1986, 1987), Warren Mackenzie (1981, 1992), Clary Illian (1983), Enrique Mestre (1990), Jeff Oeistreich (1993), and Randy Johnston (2000) among others.  

Gisela Tello is a founding member of the Asociación Venezolana de las Artes del fuego (AVAF) (1979), and the Grupo Turgua (1992).

Lives and works in Caracas.

Participates as a jury in: XI Salón Nacional de las Artes del Fuego. Valencia (1984); Primera Bienal de la Cerámica Contemporanea Puertorriqueña, Premio Casa Candina, San Juan, Puerto Rico (1988); Premio Gobernación del Distrito Federal, Mención Cerámica, Caracas(1991).


Awards: 

In 1976 receives the Premio Dirección de Cultura, Universidad de Carabobo, IV Salón Nacional de las Artes del Fuego, Valencia Venezuela.

In 1977 she obtains the Premio Nacional de Artes del Fuego, at the V Salon Nacional de las Artes del Fuego, Valencia Venezuela.

In 1985 she receives the Premio Fundación Hans Neuman at the XII Salon Nacional de las Artes del Fuego, Valencia Venezuela.

On three occasions (1984, 1990 and 1997), her work has been recognized with an honorary diploma at the World Triennale of Small Ceramics in Zagreb.

She was invited to be in the exhibition Crafting Modernity: Design in Latin America, 1940-1980 at The Museum of Modern Art, MoMA, New York, in 2024. And in Cronotopias exhibition of de C&FE Colecction at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello. Caracas.
